So this is a printed copy of the speech given by the Chartist leader George Julian Harney, when he stood for Election against Palmerston in 1847. At the time this event made National and International News. It was reported widely that Harney, having spoken for some hours, and Palmerston having spoken likewise in response, won the 'popular vote' by show of hands by a clear margin. However, he withdrew from the Ballot when it was called by Palmerston, because the Chartists were opposed to the very narrow electorate of the day. Only a few hundred of the wealthiest male inhabitants of Tiverton were allowed to vote.
