Royal Jubilees

Diamond Jubilee Procession - 1897

The Tiverton Museum article on page 21 in this month's edition of the Mid Devon One Magazine is all about royal celebrations in Tiverton.

In 1897 Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee (60 years on the throne). There was a day of special events held in Tiverton including a parade by the Town Band, a procession from the Town Hall to St Peter’s followed by a service. In the afternoon there was a procession for children from the Heathcoat Factory yard to the park followed by tea and games. The games included a boot race, bucket & potato race, donkey race, women’s threearmed race and a pole climbing competition for a leg of mutton and a barrel of beer. The day culminated in fireworks in the park and bonfires at Seven Crosses, Hill Top, Exeter Hill, Bolham Hill and Gogwell (Cove).
