Concealed Shoes

The Tiverton Museum article on page 17 in this month's edition of the Mid Devon One Magazine is all about the practice of hiding shoes and boots in houses to bring good luck and to ward off evil spirits. The museum has a display of such shoes and a hat found under floorboards at 1 Park Street.

As visitors to the museum look more closely at our display case showing some worn old boots, they realise that this is part of a cache of shoes which were concealed within a house on Park Street in Tiverton.

People used to hide old shoes and boots in their houses to bring good luck and to ward off evil spirits. Shoes were often hidden around chimneys or under floors. It is quite common to find a single shoe rather than a pair, children’s shoes are frequently found and all of the shoes are usually worn out.
